Basketball is a team
sport, sure, but sometimes you just want to know which team has the best player
on the court. On Sunday, the N.C.A.A. announced the 68 teams that will compete
in the 2019 Division I men’s basketball tournament from Tuesday through April
8.
About 47 million people — one in five
American adults — are expected to bet a combined 8.5 billion dollars.
It's that time of year again,
when all the chatter about teams involves phrases like: body of work; good wins;
bad losses; and of course, RPIs and the dreaded "bubble." But once
the bracket is revealed, how -- and even why -- teams got in matters little,
and the excitement of following your bracket begins.
Some years the
Super Bowl stinks; some years the World Series is a dud. But the NCAA
Tournament — with its 68 teams, from all across USA and featuring an
endless supply of fascinating characters and unlikely heroes — always
satisfies. It gives sports fans (or just office pool dabblers) a stake in the
action, and it is a constant generator of storylines. No matter how angry you
might be at college basketball, no matter how fundamentally unfair you may feel
the sport is, no matter how absurd it is that coaches sign million-dollar shoe contracts but players
are punished for trying to get their often-underprivilged families some money
to survive... the tournament always wins you over.
About some teams ...
Duke was given the No. 1
overall seed in the N.C.A.A. Division I men’s basketball tournament Sunday
night, starting Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his star freshman Zion Williamson on
a path to what they hope will be the Blue Devils’ sixth national title.
Duke (29-5) was one of
three Atlantic Coast Conference teams to receive top seeds, joining Virginia
(29-3) and North Carolina (27-6). It was the second time members of the same
conference were named three of the four No. 1s; the Big East did so in 2009.
Duke Blue Devils
forward Zion Williamson
has been the most celebrated (and scrutinized) player in college basketball
this season. On Sunday in Columbia, South Carolina, he'll share the floor with
another college hoops phenomenon -- 7-foot-6 center Tacko Fall of UCF (5:15 p.m. ET, CBS).
Fall made headlines in the wake of UCF's victory, telling NCAA.com he wasn't interested in appearing as an extra
on the next iteration of the Zion Williamson Dunk Project.
"It's very hard [to dunk on me]. I mean, I won't
allow it. I won't allow him putting me on one of his highlight tapes."
The fourth No. 1 seed
was Gonzaga (30-3), the small stalwart from Spokane, Wash. While the Bulldogs
lost the West Coast Conference title game to St. Mary’s last week, they already
have a win over Duke on their résumé from a tournament in late November in
Hawaii.
